Great storytelling is easy to recognise but hard to achieve. To create an engaging story there are certain aspects that need to be considered. We’ve compiled a list of tips to help you tell your story more effectively.
Why is your story different?
You often hear this a lot: “What is your unique selling point?”. With storytelling, much like a business, this is utterly essential. But not so that you convince the audience to buy your product or service, rather to find the reason that they should connect with you. The art of storytelling lies in there being a conflict that an audience can relate to.
To find what the USP of your business is that people are going to connect with, we advise our clients that they go back to their mission statement or tap into why they decided to work with the company. It could be that your business taps into a specific problem that many people experience. In that case, we advise that you explore that further and create a persona of someone that would experience this issue. Once you have this, you can build a story around this person that others can relate to.
Who are you telling the story to?
To make a story great it has to be fuelled with the interests of the intended audience to reach out to them. This is often a problem that many of our clients come to us with. It is normal to be confused when there are so many more channels for stories nowadays. To amplify your story it is imperative that you present it through a medium that engages with the audience. This could be on Facebook, YouTube or on TV.
What is the best style or tone to tell the story?
Animation
Animation is a fantastic and expressive way to tell a story. It plays to the audience imagination and attracts their attention with the beautiful artwork. Animation is perfect for stories that would cost a fortune to be told in film and for bringing together big ideas. As a style, animation allows for a story to be told quickly. With the ‘scrolling culture’, it is imperative that you are able to tell your story in an efficient manner for it to be seen.
Live-action
Live-action works better for stories whose tone relies on human connection. By seeing a person, we are able to connect with the message more.
