‘Family Planning’
A culture clash comedy of desire, deception and dolmades; Yasemin loves Stelios, but he’s Greek, she’s Turkish and their mothers hate each other. What better foundation for a family restaurant?
Family Planning is a comedy about two families living in Glasgow, one Greek Cypriot, the other Turkish Cypriot, who experience their own sectarian divide, as they learn to cope not just with each other, but with their place in a modern multi-cultural Scotland.
Yasemin, a Turkish Cypriot in her twenties, lives with her mother, Neylan, in a flat above their kebab shop. She has a new job as a family planning adviser, dispensing counsel and condoms to unwilling teenagers under the watchful eye of her absurdly hostile receptionist Doris. Yasemin is very proud of her new job; a modern Muslim taking her place in a modern Scotland… she just hasn’t quite got round to telling her mother about it yet. No point in upsetting her – Neylan still thinks her daughter’s a virgin.
She hasn’t quite mentioned her boyfriend either; Stelios is the son of Elly, the brassy Greek Cypriot who lives and runs the café next door and is the bane of Neylan’s life. When the wall between the two restaurants falls down and the council won’t let them put it back up again, all their lives are suddenly thrown into comically chaotic disarray. Yasemin must finally look into her heart and make some serious decisions about who she really is and what she really wants - and whether she’s really going to come clean about any of it.
